An international team of rescuers unearthed a 23-year-old man in good condition from deep beneath the concrete and wooden wreckage of a hotel grocery store Saturday, 11 days after an earthquake crumbled Haiti's capital.

Haiti's government has declared the search and rescue phase for survivors of the earthquake over, the United Nations announced Saturday, saying there is little hope of finding more people alive 11 days after much of the capital was reduced to rubble.

The Churchill High School Interact Club, sponsored by the Eugene Rotary Club, is having a fundraiser Saturday, January 23, 10am - 4pm at the West 11th Fred Meyer store in Eugene. Funds raised at the event will go to Holt International; a Eugene based Adoption Organization, to support their efforts...more with orphans in Haiti. Holt International has a child care center, (Holt Fontana Village) 30 miles outside of Port-au-Prince that was not damaged by the quake. It is estimated that there are as many as 300,000 orphans resulting from the earthquake.

We received this press release from Valley River Center: More people want to know what they can do to help, as the staggering need continues growing in Haiti in the earthquake's aftermath. The American Red Cross is advising that the greatest way to make a positive impact is to simply give donations...more in the form of money to help with the primary needs of food, water, shelter and medical help. Valley River Center is partnering with the American Red Cross to collect such monetary donations in the form of cash, check and credit card. Starting today, there will be a collection site located at Guest Services, which is located near JC Penney. There will be envelopes available to allow shoppers to give. Monetary donations are also being accepted online at www.redcross.org.

With Haiti's main hospitals destroyed or damaged, the U.N. hospital is one of the best now operating. Even so, its two vast tents are so jammed with severely injured patients that others are forced to lie outside.

The U.S. government is easing Haitian adoption restrictions, which could speed the way for a Eugene woman to finally bring her son home. She had feared the earthquake could delay his adoption.

I am so proud to be a part of this it is amazing to see how excited the kids are getting about being able to help. We have such a great group of students, teachers, staff, PTA and parents at Mt.Vernon.
