The third Oregonian infected with West Nile virus this year was a Lane County resident, health officials said Friday. The person contracted the virus while traveling in Idaho.

The West Nile Virus has spread to various parts of the country within the last year - resulting in more than 1,500 cases. No cases have been reported in Lane County yet, but health officials are asking horse owners to beware of the potential threat.

The Oregon Health Authority has confirmed two human cases of West Nile virus in Oregon this week - one in Coos County on the south coast and one in Malheur County in eastern Oregon.

So far there have been more than 1,100 cases reported through the middle of August. That's three times as many as usually seen at this point in the year.

The United States is in the middle of the biggest West Nile outbreak since 2004, and while Oregon and Washington don’t have any human cases so far, that could change.

Mosquitoes are hatching about two weeks early this year. Ross Penhallegon with the OSU Extension Service says this could mean more mosquitoes in the area for a longer amount of time.
