The Eugene Police Department released crime statistics from the Whiteaker neighborhood during a voluntary ban on high content alcohol. Four markets participated and EPD says the crime rate dropped 70 percent. So should malt liquor be banned permanently?

The numbers are out and it appears a three month voluntary ban on markets selling high alcohol content beverages in the Whiteaker area impacted the crime rate. Eugene police estimate crime dropped by as much as 70 percent in the area.

James Lemmon remains in the hospital Monday, less than two days after he says someone attacked him from behind on a downtown Eugene sidewalk and lit him on fire. Lemmon was burned on his head, neck, left arm and hands.

Police arrested Lloyd Ervin Austin on an unrelated warrant just hours after James David Pelfrey died from stab wounds Aug. 25. Austin has now been charged with murder for allegedly stabbing and killing Pelfrey near downtown Eugene, Ore.
