It happened when 43-year-old John P. Garcia was snowmobiling southwest of Bend and struck a tree hanging over a trail, authorities said. Investigators said neither alcohol nor excessive speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.

A jack-knifed semi-truck blocked a lane of traffic on U.S. 20, about 22 miles east of Sisters, Ore., on Tuesday afternoon.  The truck crashed in slippery, snowy conditions around milepost 78. Traffic is slow through the area. Expect delays, and carry chains.

Scenic mountain highways are closed. A foot of new snow is on the ground at Mount Bachelor Ski Resort -- with another 2 feet on the way. Tuesday brought election season to a close -- and offered promise of a great ski season just around the corner.
