Forget Guam's white sandy beaches, coral reefs and laid-back island culture. For many tourists from Japan, the biggest thrill is the chance to shoot a gun at one of Guam's ubiquitous ranges, dozens of which are tucked between upscale shopping centers.

After scraping together a mound of zucchini, broccoli, beef, pineapple and noodles on a big round Mongolian grill, Kevin Wallace measured out a shot of grapeseed oil infused with hashish and poured it over the steaming food, setting off a sizzle.

The Cannabis Cafe opened on Nov. 13 at 4:20 p.m., Oregon’s first marijuana cafe. No marijuana is sold at the establishment, but patients can bring their own or sample buds donated by growers. The cafe does not serve alcohol.

Just before Cannabis Cafe opened with media fanfare in Portland, another pot "lounge" quietly opened off of Southeast Portland's Foster Road. The owner said his lounge may be the first in Oregon, but he expects "a dozen places in a very short period of time."

"I can tell you had they done this three years ago, they'd be gone," Allen St. Pierre, spokesman for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML, said. "If they'd done it 10 years ago, there would be yellow tape around them....

A local cafe is the first of its kind in Oregon, and one of only a handful in the country. Draperies are on all of the windows to keep in line with Oregon law, which requires that medical marijuana be consumed in private.

A second medical marijuana smoking lounge is expected to open in Portland by next week. The Cannabis Cafe will be operated by the state's chapter of NORML, or the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
